The design of a Motor Magnetic Thermal Overload Protection Relay centers on the reliable and independent function of its two core protective systems within a compact housing. The thermal assembly typically consists of a set of three heater coils (one per phase) paired with bimetallic strips. Each heater coil is sized according to the motor’s current rating. The bimetallic strips are calibrated to deflect at a specific rate under thermal stress, linked to a common trip bar. This design ensures that an overload on any single phase, or a balanced overload on all three, will actuate the trip mechanism after the appropriate time delay.

The magnetic assembly operates in parallel. It features a solenoid coil through which the motor current passes. Under normal and overload conditions, the magnetic force is insufficient to move the plunger. However, during a short-circuit or locked-rotor event, the surge in current creates a powerful magnetic field that overcomes a spring force, instantly driving the plunger to strike the same trip bar. This dual-path design means the relay can provide both delayed thermal protection and instantaneous magnetic protection through a single set of output contacts that interrupt the motor starter’s control circuit.

Features like ambient temperature compensation, trip indication flags, and manual/automatic reset options enhance functionality. Ambient compensation ensures the thermal element’s response remains accurate despite changes in the surrounding air temperature.
